The Detroit Skate Club USA Hockey Program was fortunate to be
represented by two fine teams in the Tier II, Mite "BB" Division
League Championship Final Game. The USA HAWKS, coached by
Larry DeFever, defeated the USA POLAR BEARS, coached by Peter Dengate,
by a score of 4-1 to become the league champions. The
highly competitive game was played on Saturday, March 10, 2001
at the Dearborn Canfield Arena.
Previously, these two teams had met six different times, and
have developed a fierce, but friendly, rivalry. In the
previous six meetings, each team had won one game and
the remaining four games ended in a tie. Two of the games
ended in a 0-0 score.
In the championship game, Scotty Walter, a first year
mite, scored a hat-trick for the HAWKS and was
named the Championship Game Most Valuable Player. Ben
Mommersteeg added a late empty net goal for the
HAWKS. The POLAR BEAR's goal was scored by Craig Ferguson.
On the road to the Championship game, the HAWKS playoff
record was 5-0-1. This championship was earned by the great
effort of the entire team. Total team Defense and Goaltending
was the key. During the qualifying games, the HAWKS allowed
only 5 goals, while scoring 13. Goal tending was shared by
Joe DeFever and Austen Anderson. They combined for 3
shutouts in the 6 games.
